Reporting for Vox: A Conversation with Jacklyn Marceau

I wanted to share this story with those of you who haven’t seen it yet on Vox Magazine’s website. I had the pleasure of getting to know a local writer and teacher at Stephens College in Columbia, Jacklyn Marceau.

Video Art

Video art is weird. It’s really weird.

This fall, I was introduced to the art of video in a class at Mizzou. Some of the work disturbed me, most of it confused me, and all of it challenged me to see the moving image in a new way.

Here’s an example of work by Marina Abramovic, a performance artist who began her career in the early 1970’s. “Art Must be Beautiful; Artist Must be Beautiful,” is one of her early performances and is part of the 16-channel installation “Video Portrait Gallery.”

Walter Barreto, who uploaded this specific video to YouTube, provides a great explanation of the work, that I would highly recommend reading.

One of Abramovic’s more recent works, “The Artist is Present,” has recently gone viral. The romantic story between Abramovic and an ex-love captured the hearts of Internet users who wrote BuzzFeed articles and created tumblr pages dedicated to it. Despite my general apprehension toward video art, I really liked this piece. It’s amazing how much can be communicated through silence. [Click the image below for the full BuzzFeed article.]
